dr. king
This national holiday should be used as a time of reflection for the born day of one our greatest American heroes. Dr. King fought for Black people to gain the respect they deserve to participate equally in our American society. We honor his memory and his fight and perseverance that helped change American laws.
This is also the 50 year anniversary of the historical march in Selma Alabama that was instrumental in gaining voting rights for Black Americans.
Use this day off, if you are fortunate to be off, as a time to reflect, plan and set goals on what you can do in the continuing struggle for equality for all Americans. Go see the movie Selma, it is an excellent depiction of history that young people can benefit from seeing. When we know our history, we understand what is happening around us today.
