We Are the Change

It is staring us in our face, the change that we want to see is here if we seize it. I, unlike white people realize that what is happening now is not new, we have been here before. Black folks have rebelled, pushed, objected, protested, rioted, and marched for changes for as long as we have been here. Don’t believe Kanye when he said that we must have wanted to be enslaved because we didn’t do anything about it. That is a brother who admits to not reading about the history of his own people.

W. E. B. Du Bois writes in “The Soul of Black Folks” that not only did we escape captivity to fight for our freedom in the civil war, but we also became land owners and was elected into congress during the reconstruction period. We have built successful towns and businesses before they were destroyed due to envy of our white enemies. The book “Waiting ‘Til The Midnight Hour” by Peniel E. Joseph, is a narrative history of the Black Power movements in America. The book narrates the multiple groups and people who fought racism and inequality during civil rights revolutions that took place in the 60’s and 70’s.

So you see, we have always fought. Black people have always fought the power, although it is inconsistent, we have been persistent over the centuries and decades. If it were not for black people speaking out and rebelling, this country would not be living up to its ideals that it proclaims. We push the government to make or change policies that it purports itself to be about in the constitution.

We are the change that we seek. Let us realize that during this pandemic of Covid-19 and the never-ending murdering of our people, we must take this short window of opportunity to move the needle even further. I love this time of reconing for this country. We are becoming more knowledgeable about the real history of the country and the systematic racism that permeates throughout its laws and policies that disenfranchises black people. We need to speak out and make our voices heard in various ways. Everyone can do something, we can all add to the movement in an individual way.

Build and support black owned businesses. By doing so, we sow seeds into our communities for our independent future. Demand reparations of what is owed us. Read more; the more we know, the clearer we see. I am currently reading “Black Men Built the Capitol”, which exposes me to documented free labor that is proof that we built this country. We are so strong and resilient; we should be proud of our legacy. Information helps perpel us to move forward.

In the end what we want is the peace and tranquility to live our lives without the interference from others. Let us be. God gave us the precious gift of breath; no one else has the right to take it from us.
